In this episode I highlight the importance of making reading an engaging and enriching experience in the classroom for students of all literacy levels, with emphasis on the value of enhancing literacy skills to make reading more enjoyable. To foster a reading culture, key aspects include developing comprehension and reading strategy skills, creating a supportive reading environment, and incorporating various strategies across the curriculum.
Ā
Some strategies include dedicating time for daily reading, providing comfortable and accessible reading spaces, offering diverse reading materials, encouraging book recommendations, and organizing reading events. Comprehension strategies like asking questions, cultural relevance, making inferences, reader's theater, using prior knowledge, visual aids, and making connections are essential for improving students' understanding of texts.
Ā
For older students, book clubs and literature circles are recommended for deeper engagement. These settings enable students to apply classroom strategies to novels of their choice, facilitating meaningful discussions and mutual learning. By implementing these strategies, educators can promote student engagement, critical thinking, vocabulary enrichment, and cultivate a lifelong love for reading in all learners.

Promoting a Reading Culture (Raising Readers) - Sn.1 - Ep.5
Thursday Oct 26, 2023
Thursday Oct 26, 2023
Cultivating a love for reading in children from a young age is a crucial endeavor. It all begins with reading aloud to babies, establishing a routine like bedtime stories. Even before they can read, children benefit from hearing the soothing rhythm of a parent's voice and looking at pictures in books. Reading is not confined to storybooks; it includes various texts like magazines, signs, and comics, both online and physical. Encourage children to read everyday things like road signs and grocery lists.
Ā
Empower children to choose their reading materials, and lead by example - let them see you read and engage in family discussions about books. Create a comfortable reading space and make reading time special. Instead of quizzing, ask open-ended questions to spark discussions about the stories.
Ā
Promoting a lifelong love for reading involves integrating it into daily life, and in the next episode, there will be more insights on making reading interactive and engaging in the classroom.

Wednesday Oct 25, 2023
Wednesday Oct 25, 2023
In this podcast series I explore the concept of a reading culture and how to integrate reading into our lives and the lives of children. A reading culture values and promotes reading as a gateway to new worlds and knowledge. It emphasizes that reading is not just a subject but the core of education, fostering personal and social development. Creating this culture is a shared responsibility between schools and parents, making reading an integral part of daily life.
Ā
I also expound on the value of reading, as it expands vocabulary, fosters independence, boosts self-confidence, aids in understanding the world, enhances social-emotional skills, fuels imagination, and drives academic success. Instilling a love of reading from an early age is like planting a lifelong love of learning. This Reading CultureĀ series will provide practical insights and inspiring stories on promoting reading in children to make a significant difference in their lives.

Teaching For Success: Episode #3 - How we support you
Ā
Welcome! This is Rosa Mushega, the Founder of Teaching For Success.
Ā
How does Teaching For Success support you through professional development?
Professional development increases student achievement and success when teachers focus on required skills needed to address studentsā needs. Educators who do not take part in professional development do not improve their teaching skills, and this affects student learning. A school is as strong as its weakest teacher just as a chain is as strong as its weakest link. Professional development also helps schools retain new teachers and enable them to become stronger teachers by learning effective practices to apply to their teaching practice.
Ā
Teaching For success will not only be using online and in person workshops to support you as an educator or parent, but we will be airing podcasts regularly to answer your burning questions about different topics in the education sector and have discussions based on topics about we can improve our education system in Uganda, support students with challenging physical, social or academic abilities or the latest research in different areas of education. All of these discussions will help educators and parents improve their studentsā and childrenās achievement and success while leaving no child behind. In the near future we will also bring on board experts in different fields of education to speak to us about pertinent topics to increase student success.Ā
Ā

Teaching For Success: Episode #2 - What we do
Ā
Welcome! This is Rosa Mushega, the Founder of Teaching For Success.
Ā
What is Teaching For Success all about?Ā
Teaching For Success is an Organization that provides Professional Development Workshops for educators in schools or institutions at Primary, Secondary and Tertiary levels as well as Consultancy services for both educators and parents.
Ā
What is Professional Development?
Professional Development in the education sector is ongoing learning to improve and strengthen educatorās performance levels and increase student achievement. It helps educators to develop knowledge and skills required to address student needs and identify their strengths, by analyzing student achievement data common to students in a grade or class. Professional development is best carried out in teams whereby teachers collaborate under the guidance of a facilitator or instructor allowing them to take collective responsibility for the success of all students rather than just their own. Formal processes include conferences, seminars or workshops, collaborative team work or courses. Informal professional development can be in the form of discussions amongst teachers, research, or peer- to-peer learning.
Ā
How do teachers collaborate during professional deevelopment?
Teachers collect data to determine studentsā strengths and needs in order to identify gaps in their learning. They then determine what they need to learn in order to close those gaps. After learning is complete, teachers implement new knowledge and skills in their classrooms. It is imperative that teachers also come up with a plan to measure student achievement in response to the new knowledge and skills learned from professional development. This can be assessed through techniques such as surveys, tests, observations, interviews, conferencing, standardized tests, etc. As teachers learn, adopt and apply new best practices, studentsā success will be evident throughout the school student community. It is also important for teachers to discuss what worked well, or what didnāt after a reasonable period taken to implement new best practices.
Ā
What modality does Teaching For Success utilize for Workshops and Consultancy Services?
Professional Development can be provided in many forms:
School Community Learning team meetings to plan, problem solve and strengthen school performance
Online and In Person courses and workshops
Teacher peer-to-peer observations
School community learning teams
Personal research
Teaching For Success provides professional development online the majority of time and in person on occassion.Ā
When do schools typically engage in Professional development?
Professional development can take place before classes begin, after classes have ended, during a day set aside specifically for professional development, during school holidays, or after school on a teacherās own time.

Teaching For Success: Episode #1 - Who we are
Ā
Welcome to Teaching For Success!
Ā
Ā My name is Rosa Mushega, and I am the Founder of Teaching For Success, an organization that provides professional development workshops and consultancy services for educators at primary, secondary and tertiary levels, and equips parents with resources to help support their childās education.Ā
Ā
Who is Rosa you may ask? Well, this is who I am in a nutshell.Ā
Ā
I am a graduate from the London Metropolitan University, in the United Kingdom, and the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in Ontario, Canada, where I completed my degrees in Mathematics and Statistics, and Education, respectively. In addition, I am a Special Education Specialist who provides support for teachers teaching students with special needs in the areas of academics, behaviourĀ and/or abilities.Ā
Ā
As an educator I believe in not only being a lifelong learner but also sharing knowledge with others in order to improve student achievement and success.
Ā
Ok, great! Thatās me, but why did I start this organization? Firstly, I have a passion to share knowledge and help others, secondly, having lived outside the country of my birth, several years and being educated in Uganda from Kindergarten to the middle of highschool, I have a strong desire to give back to the country of my birth in the area of education. I was also inspired by my highschool math teacher who transitioned me from a student with failing grades in math to a graduate in math with honours. Her patience and understanding helped me to persevere and believe that with hard work I could achieve and excel in my education. I want that for all students and I want to make sure that no child is left behind in their learning journey of education. Every child has the potential to succeed if we as educators have the skills to equipĀ and engage them in an authentic way that makes sense and is meaningful to students.Ā
Ā
